On Drift, GAIKA cuts loose. On his new album, the visionary musician, artist and experimental rapper GAIKA invites listeners on a high-speed journey where love, pain, brutality and beauty collide to produce a vivid and provocative cinematic masterpiece, through a metamorphic genre blend of post-punk, darkwave, alt-rock and grunge with a burning hip-hop core.
One of the most progressive voices in contemporary British rap, Gaika Tavares is a multidisciplinary artist and activist whose work bridges the gap between art and everyday life, reality and any spectacular representation of it. Following releases on Warp and N.A.A.F.I, he returns with a new album Drift, 14 escapist tracks that reflect the artist's current and past influences; from Prince to Wu Tang Clan to Massive Attack; from the artist's Caribbean roots to the urban landscape of South London where Gaika lives. Featuring contributions from bbymutha, Yves Tumor, Max Winter, Charlie Stacey, The Narrator and Gorillaz's Azekel, Drift feels nostalgic and futuristic at the same time, sounding familiar but undeniably innovative. Gaika will perform the album live on Thursday 29 February at MeetFactory.
„Futuristic rap-rock-dancehall as seen through the lens of '80s and '90s nostalgia. It's another sharp turn in the road on the winding journey of a creative nomad.“ (— RA)
Opening the night will be Arleta, a rapper and visual artist who brings her dark vision that is both intimate and playful. A contrast to generic masculine rap that has dominated the scene for a long time, Arleta’s music often deals with themes such as sexism, feminism or questionable moral principles, and it does so in a unique vocal style that is recognizable from the first second.
