The symbiosis of two musical masterminds, Melbourne's experimental drummer Jim White best known as a member of instrumental rock band Dirty Three and renowned Portland guitarist Marisa Anderson, gave birth to the 2020 joint debut album The Quickening. Building on intuitive improvisation and the explorative nature of the two musicians, each piece opens the door of a new sonic universe through a continuous dialogue between pulsating syncopated rhythms and flickering guitar lines. The Quickening exemplified the artists' daring spirit as an exercise in trust: White & Anderson had never performed together before committing those first moments in time to record.
2024’s Swallowtail is a deepening of that trust, the two musicians completely immersed in the moment, each attuned to the other fluidly moving as wind and water, constantly shifting between different moods and modes. Their new record, released in May on Chicago-based independent label Thrill Jockey, was recorded in the Australian coastal town of Point Lonsdale, Victoria. Its picturesque scenery seems to have inspired the meditative feel of the six immersive compositions, which flow freely in the infinite ebb and flow of the Pacific Ocean. "The ideas aren't the music, they are the pathway into the musical possibilities." Swallowtail lives at the precipice of slowly unraveling revelation and the thrilling unknown, the authors finding beauty in pursuit of uncovering the next moment and what possibilities lie ahead of them.
Jim White & Marisa Anderson take their new record to Europe with a stop in Prague at MeetFactory on Monday, September 16.
It is music as a frozen moment, a precarious combination of energies and ephemeralities and economies. To listen to any free improvised music is to hear another world, speaking its own spontaneous language. The Quickening comes from a place very nearby our own, now lost, but recoverable by listening.
